Disparaging the Derwent River. In my defense I will say that the Derwent River is at its most beautiful upstream of New Norfolk. It is narrow, bordered by trees, flows around rocks and contains platypuses, eels and trout. It looks like a river. By the time it has reached central Hobart it has become a bay or the upper reaches of an estuary. It is large, flat and wide. The vast expanses of water dominate the local fauna and flora.
Hobart and the Derwent River and inseparable. They have become one. It is impossible to imagine Hobart without the Derwent River. I am one of the few people that has actually swum across it. So I can claim a special relationship with the much maligned heart and soul of our city.
Alan Carltonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04514278874743316749noreply@blogger.com
