Another postcard from Mitchell Falls

The aboriginal guide leads us to some rock art.  Pictures of wallaby, echidna, thylacine, possum and the rainbow serpent.

Aboriginal guide: The rainbow serpent (Wardijina). Wardijina came here 7,000 years ago. She painted these pictures and told us what to eat.

Wardijina has no mouth. If she had a mouth, she would be too powerful, cause floods, monsoons. Too much water. Respect her and she gives us the right amount of water. Not too much.

Our guide: See these people they  just wander in. Not with a guide. Don’t know anything. Might see some paintings. They will know nothing.

We walk past a pile of rocks arranged in the shape of a corpse.

Our guide: This is the Primary Burial Site. A body is placed here and protected by the rocks from all the animals. After 6 months the dried bones are taken for second ceremonial burial.

I ask the obvious question.m

The answer: These bones were put here about 15 years ago. They have never been used. They were put here to show people the way things are one.
